The HandFestival was first presented (a little differently) in an aged care residence in Stockholm by Prof Rebecca Hilton (a Choreographer from UniArtsStockholm) and researchers from Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm University and Konstfack - we have been working together since 2017 (funding through Swedish Research Council Formas) exploring space and place in end of life care settings with a focus on aged care. The HandFestival stems from our research on gestures and movements of people in aged care settings and hence the hand became a focus as it is key to communication, expression, eating, working, making etc - across the aged care context (residents, staff etc).
The Melbourne HandFestival was a social practice choreographed event - designed with a focus on the hand for trust and intimate hand activities which included hand drawing, origami, hand massages, wax modelling, mbira, knitting, cats cradle and more.
